NFL Playoff Predictions

Hola! Sorry I haven't posted in a few. Busy times. My 2007 movie rankings are coming very soon. But first, let's talk about the NFL playoffs with what I think will happen. I'm listing the teams in increasing likelihood of winning the Super Bowl based on the current Trade Sports odds are.

12. Tennessee Titans 10-6 0.6%: Odd that the Titans make the playoffs when Vince Young played much worse than last year. The only real advantage the Titans have over their first opponent San Diego is coaching. San Diego seems to have turned it around from their miserable start and should easily knock Tennessee out of the playoffs. Maybe next year for the Titans. Of course...San Diego has been a notorious playoff flopper...and the miserable Norv Turner is coaching. Still....San Diego by 10.

11. New York Giants 10-6 1.0%: The Giants certainly looked like a contender against the Patriots. But did they waste all their energy? And do I trust Eli Manning in a playoff game...even against arguably the worst team in the playoffs, the Tampa Bay Bucs? No. I think the Bucs edge the Giants in a tight one.

10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9-7 1.2%: Even if they beat the Giants, this team looks to stand no chance against either the Packers or Cowboys.

9. Washington Redskins 9-7 1.2%: The sentimental favorite and potential wild card in the NFC. They certainly have a winnable game against a mediocre Seattle team. Still, Seattle has the home field. But don't count out the momentum and emotion from such a roller coaster year. Seattle wins by 1.

8. Pittsburgh Steelers 10-6 1.8%: The only team with a home game that is the underdog and with good reason. Jacksonville is the better team and Pittsburgh has stumbled into the playoffs. The Steelers have the home field but Jacksonville won't be afraid. I say Jags by 1.

7. Seattle Seahawks 10-6 1.9%: Similar to Tampa Bay. At least they don't have to play Dallas. If they win they play Green Bay. Expect a double digit loss if they advance.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars 11-5 3.8%:My brother's dark horse pick to win it all. The Jags certainly have looked good this year. The only thing hurting their odds is having to play the first week. And they will be a significant underdog to either the Colts or Patriots.

5. San Diego Chargers 11-5 3.9%: My dark horse pick to win it all. I don't think they will. But they are the highest of the non-bye teams because they don't have to play the Patriots until potentially the AFC Title game. They'd be higher if they had a better coach though.

4. Green Bay Packers 13-3 5.5%: Ok maybe Brett Favre shouldn't have retired. Losing homefield will probably cost them though if they reach the NFC Title game.

3. Dallas Cowboys 13-3 12.0%: I know they were resting players, but boy they looked bad against Washington. Still, the favorite to reach the Super Bowl from the NFC. Will be hoping Tampa Bay and Seattle win so they don't have to play a divisional rival their first game.

2. Indianapolis Colts 13-3 14.4%: Don't forget about the Colts who want to end this Patriots talk and win their 2nd straight Super Bowl. If any team can knock off the Pats, it's the Colts. However, the home field advantage may be too great to overcome.

1. New England Patriots 16-0 52.9%: Who else? The Patriots have a very good chance of winning every game by double digits this postseason. They will be playing good teams every time. I think they will have to beat Jacksonville, Indianapolis and Dallas to claim the Super Bowl. But they will do it capping one of the most remarkable seasons in football history.

Happy Atheist Children Get Presents Day!

Christmas was good this year. It's nice to have family to love and be loved through good times and bad.

Now enough of that sappy shit.

Saw AvP: Requiem. Probably better than any Alien or Predator movie in the last 20 years. Not that there's a great deal of competition. Still, I was left a little cold. Perhaps my hopes were gotten up for the R-rated trailer. Oh well.

I've been playing Rock Band with my brother and his friends the past few days. It's way too addicting. My brother usually refuses to play these types of games but even he was drawn in this time. I must say there are some enjoyable songs to play. Of course Say It Ain't So and Creep are fun. And I had a blast to sing to When You Were Young even though it is a terrible song. The two I enjoy most though are Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria. and Maps by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Yes I know Coheed and Cambria suck. But the song is fun to play along to. And although Maps is extremely easy on expert mode with guitar...the drum part is astoundingly difficult. I could barely pass Medium and my brother who used to drum said Medium was very hard. Pretty intense.

The Patriots can close an unbeaten season this weekend. I say New England beats the Giants by 2 touchdowns.

So true... http://www.theonion.com/content/news/pitchfork_gives_music_6_8

I pay the highest compliment possible to LCD Soundsystem's "Someone Great" It's a song that I wish I had written.

I bought another homebuilder stock on Monday. Why won't God stop me?

I'm Such A Moron

See. I told you I'm an idiot. I said Georgetown, Xavier, Clemson and Arkansas would win yesterday. Whoops!

Speaking of Arkansas, I'm pretty surprised that Appalachian won. That's the type of win that could turn a season around.

And the Panthers unsurprisingly lost to Dallas yesterday. So they're out of the playoffs. They wouldn't have done anything anyway so it's probably for the best.

I saw the Rob Zombie remake of Halloween the other night. We have a strong contender for the bottom of my 2007 rankings. Of course the original is my favorite John Carpenter movie (YES WILL EVEN BETTER THAN THE THING) so it was already on slippery ground.

I've been entering some No limit Hold Em tournaments on PokerStars. I've also been getting my ass handed to me. Another one starts at 1 so hopefully I'll do a little better.

I forgot to bring my board game Puerto Rico home. I've been playing it online and it's probably my favorite board game ever. Oh well.

I'm in the midst of the last Sopranos season (tear). I don't want it to end it's so good.

Ok I'm gonna get ready for my poker tournament. Adios!

A Good Day For Sports

Lot of good college basketball on today. We have Memphis-Georgetown, Tennessee-Xavier, Texas-Michigan State, Clemson-Mississippi and assorted others. I think Georgetown will upend Memphis. Memphis is my current #1 but it's at Georgetown and Georgetown has the better coach and will probably play better as a team. Memphis is extremely talented but they generally play very raw and try to win with their pure talent. When they play talented teams that are coached well, that generally ends badly. I think Texas will fall from the unbeatens today with a close loss to Michigan State. I say Xavier knocks off Tennessee. I also think Clemson stays perfect in an unusual battle of the unbeatens against Mississippi. I'd like to think Clemson is for real this year. But they did start 17-0 last year and still miss the NCAA Tournament. How is that possible?

And later tonight the 6-8 Carolina Panthers, who are somehow still alive for a playoff berth, will face Dallas. Am I picking an upset? Hell no. Of course if Jessica Simpson shows up and distracts Tony Romo again, you never know. Of course this will all be rendered moot when Minnesota beats Washington tomorrow and knocks Carolina out.

I was talking to my cousin the other day who played for Appalachian State in the mid-90s and he said there will be no Michigan-style win next year. Why? Because nobody will schedule App. Apparently nobody is willing to play them. Haha. Pansies!

Appalachian's basketball team is 4-5 and will lose today to Arkansas. Do you like that confidence?

Mighty William & Mary is 2-6. And have I mentioned they've never made the NCAA Tournament? That's awesome to be a huge basketball fan and your future alma mater never having made it. Although if I had went to Wake Forest, they're only 7-3, which sounds good but ACC play hasn't even started yet. Don't expect a postseason bid.

I'm not jealous that I didn't get into Vanderbilt because I think William & Mary is just as good if not better. However, I am jealous of Vandy's 10-0 basketball team. So unfair.

Kentucky has lost four straight and is 4-5. Tubby Smith's new team Minnesota is 7-1. Good job running him out of town guys. Miss him yet?

And my final prediction is that Ohio State will get their revenge on Florida today! However, it will not matter very much as it is a regular season game and not a national title game. One out of three ain't bad though Buckeyes!

The Final (I Swear) 2006 Movie Ranking

Before I post my ranking of the movies I have seen in 2007, I have decided to do my third and final revising of last year's movies. Tell me I'm wrong. I dare you.

39. Saw III- Has anyone realized the Saw movies suck yet? Anybody? My brother's friend told me the ending would blow my mind. Oh my mind was blown all right. Blown that this goddamn series is still going strong with its fourth entry.

38. The Marine- Far be it from me to criticize former WWE Champ John Cena's thespian abilities...but this was actually released to theatres? It looked like a direct-to-video specialty to me.

37. Turistas- Perhaps the worst of the recent emergence of torture horror. Oh wait, Saw III was worse. Never mind. Still I knew this one would rank low after the hideously boring 10 minute underwater chase scene.

36. See No Evil- Thanks to The Marine, this wasn't even the worst WWE film of the year. Although the movie was terrible I will give it some credit for some fairly entertaining death scenes.

35. Lady in the Water- I think we've already established that Shyamalan is still making his reputation off one good film, and really guys, The Sixth Sense was good but it wasn't that good. The plot was laugable but it's especially heinous with all the little digs Shyamalan makes at his critics. Such as having the most hatable character in the movie be....a critic! And Shyamalan plays himself as someone who will write great works in the future. Ego much?

34. Deja Vu- Pretty laughable sci-fi action hooey. It dives off the cliff never to return with the car chase that's sort of through time but not really. Not sure how to explain. Denzel...YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT!

33. Eragon- Watching this makes me give Peter Jackson a lot more credit. Damn this was terrible.

32.Glory Road- Sports team overcomes adversity to prove all the critics wrong. Sorry, did I spoil the ending?

31. The Hills Have Eyes- Torture porn continues. But without heart. Aja's Haute Tension was a much better film, so maybe it was just a lapse in concentration.

30. Hostel- More torture porn. These movies suffer even more because there were some pretty good horror films this year.

29. X-Men: The Last Stand: Apparently someone dared Brett Ratner if he could ruin the X-Men franchise in only one film. He gave it the old college try.

28. Fearless: Pretty forgettable Jet Li action film.

27. Rocky Balboa: Much better than I was expecting. Certainly not the worst of the series. Not the best either.

26. Apocalypto: Well it was better than The Passion. Not by much but better.

25. Mission Impossible III: I don't really remember much except Hoffman. And I love Hoffman. So we'll put it here.

24. Nacho Libre: Completely ridiculous Jack Black movie. But it was better than Napoleon Dynamite. True dat!

23. Superman Returns: Great special effects and whatnot, but why was the movie so damn bleak. Shouldn't we be having fun while watching? And Kate Bosworth was terrible as Lois Lane.

22. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: Same as Superman Returns. Great effects but the tone was misguided. And Jack Sparrow's character was ruined. A pale imitation of the first film.

21. Thank You For Smoking: Pretty solid satire although it got a little Disneyesque at the end. And I use Disneyesque in it's worst connotation.

20. Snakes on a Plane: It was fun. That's all I asked for.

19. Inside Man: Pretty enjoyable but sometimes I get annoyed with these con movies. Like the writers have just been screwing me for about 2 hours. And I didn't even get to cuddle afterwards. Wait...did I just say that?

18. Talladega Nights: It's no Anchorman. Still pretty funny though

17. Slither: One of the oddest horror films I've seen recently. Juggles being pretty dark and being nastily comic pretty well.

16. Blood Diamond: Solid acting by everyone not named Jennifer Connelly (at least she's nice to look at) although at times it was preachy. And if I wanted to be preached to I'd go to church. And I don't go to church.

15. An Inconvenient Truth: Speaking of preachy...but seriously Al Gore delivers his case remarkably well. Could be seen in the future as the most important film of 2006. But most important doesn't mean best. In fact in this case, it means 15th best.

14. Flags of Our Fathers: A pretty strong year when a film like this is ranked this low. Although the last 1/3 got really preachy with a painful AND I MEAN PAINFUL narration hammering home the theme of the entire film. Thank you. I'm not dumb. I got the point.

13. Curse of the Golden Flower: I was expecting an exciting martial arts epic but instead got a Shakespearean style drama. Not that that's a good thing. Excellent acting, amazing production design led to one of the most underappreciated films this year. It's a downer though.

12. Babel: Crash wins the Oscar. Babel is a better film in virtually the same style and it doesn't win the Oscar. Not saying it should have. But that's why Crash shouldn't have won. Babel wasn't perfect though. When juggling plot lines, it's important not to make sure one dominates the others. If you can't accomplish that then why not just have a singular narrative. Rinko Kikuchi's part as a deaf school girl in Japan is the best part of the film and she steals the entire movie from the likes of Pitt, Blanchett, et al

11. Little Miss Sunshine: Enjoyable road comedy with some of the most entertaining characters in recent memory. But a Best Picture nomination was a tad much.

10. The Descent: Perhaps the best horror film in a decade was made even more interesting by the director's statement that there are no real monsters. WHA? I think I'll have to watch again...

9. Casino Royale: The best Bond since....well I don't know when. A damn long time that's for sure.

8. Brick: OK how's this...we'll do a film noir...but it's setting isn't in some seedy section of Los Angeles or NYC, it's a modern day high school. And the characters all talk like they're reading script from a dimestore novel. And it works? Whoda thunk it?

7. Borat: I haven't laughed so hard in such a long time. It seems there is a developing backlash against it but pay no attention to the haters. Brilliantly subversive

6. The Departed: Not Scorsese's best but still one of the finest movies of the year.

5. The Queen: Mirren clearly deserved her Oscar. I was surprised how witty the movie was. Just superb acting, design, plot, all around.

4. United 93: A deserving tribute to those who died in 9/11. The move to cast non-names and go for realism was a brilliant stroke.

3. Children of Men: Dystopian science fiction with the best camerawork this year bar none.

2. Letters from Iwo Jima: The best war film since Saving Private Ryan. Masterful direction and score from Clint Eastwood. Made all the more powerful as it made this American cry for the Japanese protagonists.

1. Pan's Labyrinth: I've continued seeing great movies such as Iwo Jima and The Queen and Pan's Labyrinth still towers over them all. Guillermo del Toro always had talent but this proved that he is a titan in today's cinema world. Whatever he does for the rest of his career, he has cemented himself into history for Pan's Labyrinth. I've written all I can say in previous entries. If you haven't seen it by now, then you should be ashamed of yourself.

Presidential Candidates Ranking

Haven't done one of these in awhile so let's do my semi-regular ranking of the most likely people to become President in 2008. Take my predictions with a grain of salt. After the midterm election I said John McCain was the front runner. Whoops! In fact, let's just ditch my rankings because I clearly don't know what the hell I'm talking about. Let's see what InTrade has to say.

11. Michael Bloomberg 0.6%: People keep thinking he may throw his hat in the ring. And he can afford to wait awhile as he has a few bucks stashed away. But he isn't running yet. And I'm not sure if this is the year American is willing to vote for a non-Democrat/Republican. Still, he needs to be considered especially if say the nominees were to be a tad polarizing.

10. Fred Thompson 1.3%: He was all but being anointed the Republican front-runner back in July without even being in the race. His start has been less than stellar. Seems completely out of his element in the debates. Pretty pale imitation of Ronald Reagan. Still, the Republicans seem wide open so if he can hold his own in the first few primaries, he may be able to cause trouble. But I wouldn't count on it.

9. Al Gore 1.8%: Will the recent Nobel laureate throw his hat in the ring. I used to think so, but it's looking pretty unlikely now. Unless he does so in the next week or so as a shock candidate, I don't see it happening. Probably for the best. He would just hurt his popularity at this point and can probably be seen as being above the fray with the climate change issue.

8. John Edwards 2.6%: People keep forgetting about Mr. Edwards, as the Democrats increasingly look like Obama vs Clinton for the title. But if he can finish top 2 in Iowa, he will immediately become much more credible. #1 is in his grasp as he is very close in the polls with Clinton and Obama. If he finishes 3rd, I think he's dead in the water.

7. Ron Paul 4.2%: Are these percentages inflated? Perhaps. But he is raising a ton of money for a "non-credible" candidate. Can that be ignored. Well it could with Howard Dean. We'll see if money translates to votes.

6. Mike Huckabee 4.6%: Now the front-runner in Iowa, but the Republicans will surely come to their senses. I mean would they really nominate a candidate who doesn't believe in evolution. Even Bush believes in that doesn't he? And one with such pathetic foreign policy credentials? One who was advocating AIDS patients be quarantined as late as the '90s? Have I mentioned I'm not a fan? The Democrats already have the advantage. Nominating him would provoke a landslide the likes of which we haven't seen since Reagan. At least I hope so...

5. John McCain 9.0%: McCain looked dead earlier this year. But he may be turning it around at just the right time.

4. Mitt Romney 9.5%: Romney has to be terrified of Huckabee at this point. Romney has basically become a citizen of Iowa and now is in danger of losing with only 2 weeks to go or so. If he loses Iowa, I think an early withdrawal is very likely.

3. Rudy Giuliani 11.8%: Rudy doesn't really care about Iowa, although the rise of Huckabee is helping hurt his main contender. But suddenly Rudy's lead is evaporating in the polls. Are the voters finally learning too much about him? Or is it completely irrelevant as the national polls aren't worth the paper they're printed on in my opinion?

2. Barack Obama 16.3%: Isn't it funny how the press gives up on candidates before a vote has even taken place. Now Obama is seen as resurgent with the help of Oprah and some idiotic Clinton tactics.

1. Hilary Clinton 39.1% Still the leading contender, but the sense of inevitability has been lost. Clinton campaign workers playing the "Obama is a Muslim sleeper agent" card. Using Obama's Kindergarten papers against him (man that smacks of desperation). She can afford an early loss, but it will make the fight much more grueling. Still, she's got to be the #1 candidate still.

It's Been A Long Time

Yeah so back in April I said I was going to try to post more often. This is my first post since then. Mission accomplished!

So what's been going on in my life since then...quick recap time!

Went to a Wilco concert this summer. Awesome
Been at William & Mary for a semester now...and haven't flunked out yet!
Met a lot of cool people
Yadda Yadda Yadda

I didn't even publish my college basketball preview. Very sad. My preseason Final Four was UCLA, Memphis, North Carolina and Kansas in case you were wondering.

Also since I last posted, I hit an all time high in my personal portfolio. And then proceeded to lose around $10,000 in just a few months. I'm really enjoying the Subprime Meltdown Dance Party.

While I'm home for Christmas, me and my brother have made plans to see Aliens vs Predator: Requiem on Christmas Day. We really need girlfriends. Wait...that's changed too? I can't use tat joke right now? Things really have changed in just 8 months or so!

And since I've been gone Radiohead released their newest album which is their best since OK Computer. I'm probably picking it for Album of the Year.

Speaking of Year-End Awards, I'm in the process of doing my annual Ranking of Every Movie I Witnessed This Year. That will be coming very soon. And I promise that doesn't mean in 8 months.

More posts coming shortly. I bid you adieu!
